Yoga Etiquette

Yoga Etiquette

In the same way that there is a certain expectation of how to behave around the table or when visiting someone in their home, there are also manners when it comes to yoga practice. Although it goes without saying, below are considerations for when you are in a collective yoga space.

Arrive on time

Arrive 5-10 minutes early to settle in, prepare your mat and props and relax.

If you come to class a bit later (no more than 10"), be quiet and respectful to those already in there and likely already in the yoga mood.

Remove shoes

Remove your shoes before entering the studio to keep it clean and also show respect for the yoga space, which you share.

Turn off electronics

Phones and other services should be silenced or turned off before entering the studio.

Keep focused on your yoga, rather than looking at your watch.

Minimise conversations

While waiting for the class to start, keep the conversation quiet.

When class starts, avoid unnecessary noises or sharing your yoga experience, unless asked by the teacher.  A peaceful atmosphere should be maintained.

Be mindful of your space

Choose a mat placement that allows room for others and avoid stepping on others' mats.  Someone's mat is their private yoga space for the time being.

Don't throw your mat to the floor when someone is already relaxing.  Instead, open it carefully.

Respect the environment

Avoid changing lights or shades, opening windows or turning heaters on without permission.

Follow the teacher's guidance

Listen and pay attention to the teacher's guidance and instructions, as they are leading the class and ensuring everyone's safety.  If you need a different practice for an injury or some occasional pain, talk to the teacher, preferably before the class starts.

It's okay to modify poses to suit your level.  Try to maintain the overall structure of the class, as pointed out by the teacher.
